Inspect the frame, locks, grips, and floor-contact parts before relying on a walker or rollator. Include brakes, a seat, and accessories only when your model has them. Stop use when a part is damaged or a required function is unreliable.

This checklist separates simple visual checks from repairs that require model-specific instructions or qualified service. It is general information, not a replacement for the current manual, a service procedure, or an individualized mobility assessment.

Start with the exact model and its instructions

Find the manufacturer, model number, current manual, and supplier contact. A walking frame without wheels, a two-wheel walker, and a rollator do not have identical inspection requirements. Check only the components present on your device, using the procedures and maintenance schedule specified for that model.

Do not assume that a replacement part or adjustment shown for another brand is compatible. If the instructions are unavailable, ask the supplier before making an adjustment.

1. Look over the frame and locking parts

With the device unoccupied and positioned as directed by its manual, look for bent tubing, cracks, damaged joints, missing fasteners, or unusual looseness. Check that the frame is fully opened and that required folding locks are engaged.

Inspect height-adjustment buttons, clips, and knobs for correct engagement at the prescribed settings. Do not change the fitted height simply to compensate for wobbling. If a lock does not engage or a structural part is damaged, stop using the device and contact the supplier.

2. Check grips and contact points

3. Inspect wheels and movement

Where wheels are fitted, look for damage, loose components, uneven wear, and debris around accessible areas. Note scraping, wobbling, sticking, or a new change in movement.

Remove accessible dirt only as allowed by the manual. Do not dismantle wheel assemblies, alter axle tension, or apply a general-purpose lubricant as an experiment. A wheel that remains loose or does not move as expected needs assessment before the device is used again.

4. Check brakes if the model has them

Follow the exact manufacturer's pre-use procedure for each brake and parking function. Check visible cables and housings for damage or displacement, and note inconsistent response, failure to engage, or failure to release.

Do not use a slope, a seated person, or someone relying on the device as a brake test. Do not continue using a rollator with unreliable brakes. Brake adjustment and replacement should follow the model's instructions and be carried out by an appropriate service provider when required.

5. Inspect the seat, back support, and accessories

If the model includes an approved user seat, inspect its surface, supports, and required latches. Check the back support and its attachment points for damage or looseness. Do not use the seat when required parts are damaged, missing, or incorrectly installed.

Check that approved bags and accessories are attached correctly and do not interfere with wheels, brakes, or folding parts. Follow their separate load limits. This inspection does not authorize sitting on a product without an approved seat or transporting a person on a standard rollator.

6. Clean using the permitted method

Consult the product manual for compatible cleaning products and methods. Cleaning removes dirt; disinfection is a separate process with its own product-label requirements. Do not assume a disinfectant suitable for a metal frame is suitable for a padded grip or fabric seat.

Avoid introducing liquid into components not intended to get wet. Remove permitted cleaning residue and dry the device as directed before use. Pay particular attention to grips, rubber tips, wheels, and other friction surfaces: they should not be left slippery.

Do not apply an unverified bleach concentration, solvent, abrasive, pressure-washing method, or lubricant. The exact product instructions take precedence over general online cleaning advice.

7. Recheck after transport, impact, or service

After folding and reopening, confirm the required locks and accessories are correctly positioned. If the device has been dropped, struck, or involved in an incident, stop and arrange an appropriate inspection rather than assuming that the absence of visible damage proves it is sound.

After a repair or part replacement, complete the manufacturer's return-to-use checks. Keep a simple record of the date, problem, work performed, parts used, and service provider.

  • A frame, joint, wheel, seat, or required support is cracked, bent, loose, or incomplete.
  • A required folding lock or adjustment fastener does not engage.
